Ucsd cog sci2/1/2024 The important thing to understand about UCSD as a whole is that it's not particularly geared towards job-preparation the interest of the university aligns much closer to what we'd probably think of as grad-school preparation.Įspecially outside of engineering - although perhaps within engineering too, I'm not familiar with that side of the house - the university assumes (this is a simplification, but I don't think a huge one) that the average student is more interested in pursuing a graduate degree at a competitive university than taking their bachelor's and going right into the workforce. Physics and applied Math are also really good majors coming from an engineering standpoint, and pretty employable. Probably the most employable side of CogSci is HCI, (focused on front end software design), where I'd again advise a CS minor. I'm also Cogs ML/CS minor, but I'm planning to head to grad school. I have lot's of friends who are Cogs majors CS minors who are very employable, for example one of them is headed off to Amazon, another to Microsoft, and another to Spotify. If you want more job security I highly suggest you pick up a CS minor. That said Cogs ML does give you some useful skills though I don't think it's actually the best degree if you want to go into ML (probably applied math/CS minor). If your mentality is "I'm gonna get a degree, and get a job because of my degree" you'll probably be disappointed no matter what You need to be thinking about what kind of job you want and what classes can prepare you for it (and internships and projects). I'd say this is true for all majors, but this is more true of CogSci than engineering. R/UCSD is not created, endorsed, promoted by or affiliated with the University of California San Diego.ĬogSci is not the kind of major where you can just graduate UCSD CogSci and get a job, it depends a lot on your extracurriculars, internships ect.
